Digital darkroom

September 30th, 2008 by paul

In photography nothing ever beats good composition. A photo can be horribly bad from a technical perspective, but good composition can always hide that. That said, it doesn’t mean well composed images can’t be improved.

Below are two versions of the same image taken from a wedding album I’m working on at the moment. The first image is after a basic conversion from RAW, while the second image has been worked in the “digital darkroom”. Firstly it was warmed up, then given a glow (weddings are meant to be fairytales remember?), and then a heavy vignette coupled with blurred edges was added to give it a bit of an old school feel and to bring the focus to the groom’s hand around the bride’s waist.

It’s worse than I thought

Seriously, there should be a law against this sort of behaviour. Bah humbug.

Too early perhaps?

Elaine and I are doing our weekly shopping right now. At the end of aisle there’s a stand stocked with Christmas stockings. Now, by my calculations Christmas is still a good 89 days away. Crazy. Well I guess I can’t accuse Safeway of being under prepared.

New project

September 23rd, 2008 by paul

I’ve been keeping it somewhat of a secret that I’m working on a new project at home. Yes, another expensive hobby. This time it’s an aquarium. I’ll be posting much more about it in the future, but here’s a quick shot I took of some of the inhabitants.

Tackling the lack of updates

September 22nd, 2008 by paul

I’ve been thinking long and hard about how to keep this weblog up to date. The main barrier seems to be the fact that I don’t like posting without photos… but photos take time. So this photo marks a new phase for this weblog. It was taken with my Nokia N95 just seconds ago and uploaded with an appliction called ShoZu. Despite the use of a camera phone it will hopefully put the emphasis back on photos, and less on my substandard writing skills. I’ve entitled this rather artsy photo “Springtime in Melbourne” as a homage to the great weather we’re having today… not.
